Activity 11: Comparing the Factors

For discussion: Rescuers and Bystanders

Feedback to the whole group or class what you have learned about the rescuers.

Now compare the examples of rescuers and bystanders in this section.

  • What do you think made some non-Jews risk their lives to help rescue Jews whilst others did nothing?

Consider the following characteristics/factors.
Using the chart below, decide which you think refer to rescuers and which to bystanders.  You may not want to use all of them :

  • A good upbringing
  • Religious
  • Witnessed atrocities first hand
  • Selfishness
  • Had faced hardships themselves
  • A good soul
  • Feared the consequences of their actions
  • Opportunity
  • Risk-taker
  • Knew Jewish people personally
  • Were asked for help
  • Tendency to conform/be obedient
  • Recognised Jews were fellow human beings

  • Look closely at your completed chart.  Which decisions are based on fact and which on opinion?  Are you able to back up your opinions with evidence?
